This 5-day safari is designed for travelers who want to focus their time on Tanzania’s two most spectacular wildlife destinations — Ngorongoro Crater and the northern Serengeti’s Mara River region — without the long overland transfers of a full circuit. After a scenic overland journey through Ngorongoro and into the Serengeti, you’ll spend two full days in the Mara area, famous for dramatic river crossings during migration season, before flying out directly from the Serengeti’s Kogatende airstrip. It’s an ideal itinerary for photographers, migration-chasers, and travelers short on time who still want maximum time in the bush.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Arusha to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing through Mto wa Mbu and the Rift Valley escarpment along the way. Arrive in time for a game drive on the crater rim or a short visit to a nearby viewpoint overlooking the caldera. Overnight on the Ngorongoro Crater rim or in Karatu. Day 2: Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park
After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive across the crater floor — one of Africa’s densest concentrations of wildlife, including the “Big Five” and resident black rhinos. In the afternoon, exit the crater and continue north to the Serengeti, arriving in time for an evening game drive en route to camp. Overnight in central or northern Serengeti. Day 3: Serengeti National Park (North / Mara River Area)
Full day exploring the northern Serengeti’s Mara River region, one of the most dramatic wildlife theatres in Africa. Depending on the season, witness dramatic river crossings as wildebeest and zebra brave crocodile-infested waters during the Great Migration. Morning and afternoon game drives with plenty of time to track predators following the herds. Overnight in the northern Serengeti (Kogatende area). Accommodation: Serengeti
Day 4: Serengeti National Park (North / Mara River Area)
Another full day dedicated to the Mara River region, offering a second chance to witness river crossings and predator action, along with the chance to explore different areas of the northern plains. This extra day significantly increases your odds of catching a crossing if you’re visiting during migration season (roughly July–September). Overnight in the northern Serengeti. Day 5: Morning Game Drive – Fly from Kogatende to Kilimanjaro Airport
Enjoy a final morning game drive in the northern Serengeti after breakfast, making the most of the early light and last wildlife sightings. Transfer to the Kogatende airstrip for your scheduled light aircraft flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), connecting with your onward international flight or next destination.
