6 Days Marangu Route

6 Days Marangu Route overview

Experience Mount Kilimanjaro through the classic Marangu Route, one of the mountain’s most established climbing routes and the only main route offering overnight accommodation in mountain huts. Over six days, trek through Kilimanjaro’s changing ecological zones, from lush rainforest and open moorlands to the high alpine environment surrounding Kibo.

Known for its distinctive hut accommodation and relatively gradual trail profile, the Marangu Route offers a different experience from Kilimanjaro’s camping routes. The six-day itinerary includes additional time for acclimatization, helping you adjust to the increasing altitude while enjoying the spectacular scenery along the way.

Your journey takes you through Mandara and Horombo before continuing toward Kibo Hut, where you prepare for the final ascent. The summit attempt begins in the early hours, leading you toward Gilman’s Point and along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres—the highest point in Africa.

With Mbogo Expeditions, your climb is supported by an experienced mountain crew and carefully organized from the first trail to the final descent. The 6-day Marangu Route is an excellent choice for travellers who prefer hut accommodation and a structured approach to climbing Kilimanjaro.

ITINERARY

Day 1 — Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate, where you will complete park registration and meet your mountain crew.

From the gate, begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest. The trail gradually climbs beneath tall trees and dense vegetation, with opportunities to observe the unique flora of Kilimanjaro.

After several hours, arrive at Mandara Hut, your first mountain accommodation. Settle in, enjoy dinner and rest for the night.

Trekking: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut
Habitat: Montane Forest
Trekking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your ascent as the dense forest gives way to open moorland.

The trail passes through beautiful high-altitude vegetation, with views toward the volcanic peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi becoming increasingly impressive as you climb.

Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, settle in and enjoy the mountain surroundings before dinner and overnight rest.

Trekking: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut
Habitat: Moorland
Trekking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. Rather than continuing directly toward the summit, spend an additional day around Horombo Hut to allow your body more time to adjust to the altitude.

Depending on weather, your condition and your guide’s recommendation, take an acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or another suitable nearby area before returning to Horombo Hut.

Enjoy the spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi, then return to camp for rest and preparation for the higher elevations ahead.

Trekking: Acclimatization hike around Horombo
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Zone
Trekking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, leave Horombo and continue across the upper moorland toward Kibo Hut.

The landscape gradually becomes more barren as you approach the alpine desert. Cross the broad Saddle, the high-altitude area between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon and settle in. Your guides will brief you about the summit attempt and help you prepare your equipment.

Have an early dinner and get as much rest as possible, as the summit climb begins during the night.

Trekking: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trekking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Summit Day

Your summit attempt begins around midnight after a light meal and final preparations.

Trek slowly through the darkness across the steep scree toward Gilman’s Point, located on the crater rim. From there, continue around the crater rim toward Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

Reach the summit and take time to celebrate your achievement and appreciate the extraordinary views from the roof of Africa.

After the summit, begin your descent toward Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshment before continuing down to Horombo Hut.

The descent offers a welcome change in scenery as you leave the high-altitude environment behind.

Trekking: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Kibo Hut → Horombo Hut
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic Zone / Moorland
Trekking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the moorland and back into the lush montane rainforest.

Enjoy the changing vegetation as you gradually descend toward Marangu Gate. Once at the gate, complete the park exit procedures and meet your transfer vehicle.

Transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax and celebrate completing your Kilimanjaro climb.
