6 Days Rongai Route
6 Days Rongai Route overview
Climb Kilimanjaro from the Northern Side
Experience Mount Kilimanjaro from a different perspective on the 6 Days Rongai Route, a scenic ascent approaching Africa’s highest mountain from the northern side near the Kenya border. The route offers a distinctive journey through forest, moorland and high-altitude alpine landscapes before joining the eastern side of the mountain for the final approach to Uhuru Peak.
The Rongai Route is particularly appealing to trekkers looking for a quieter trail and a different perspective of Kilimanjaro. As you ascend, the landscape gradually changes from cultivated areas and montane forest to open moorland and the dramatic high-altitude environment around Kibo and Mawenzi.
The journey continues toward Kibo Hut, located between the two major volcanic peaks of Kilimanjaro. From here, prepare for the demanding summit attempt, beginning in the early hours and climbing toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, descend through the southern side of the mountain toward Horombo and eventually Marangu Gate.
The 6-day Rongai itinerary combines spectacular mountain scenery with a challenging high-altitude trekking experience. However, like all Kilimanjaro climbs, the route requires proper preparation, a steady pace and careful attention to acclimatization. TANAPA recommends ascending slowly to allow the body to adjust to increasing altitude, and all climbs must be undertaken with a licensed operator.
With Mbogo Expeditions, your Rongai climb is carefully organized from your transfer to the trailhead and park registration through mountain logistics, experienced guiding, summit preparation and your descent from the mountain. Trek across Kilimanjaro’s changing ecological zones and challenge yourself to reach the Roof of Africa.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to the Rongai Gate, located on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenya border. After completing park registration and meeting your mountain crew, begin trekking from the Rongai trailhead.
The trail initially passes through local farmland before entering the montane forest. The northern slopes offer a quieter approach to the mountain, with views gradually opening toward the surrounding plains as you gain elevation.
Continue at a steady pace toward Simba Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.
Hiking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Overnight: Simba Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
After breakfast, continue ascending through the moorland zone toward Second Cave. The trail provides increasingly open views of Kibo and the surrounding northern landscape.
After a break, continue along the trail toward the Mawenzi side of Kilimanjaro. The landscape becomes more rugged as vegetation begins to thin, and the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi come into view.
Continue to Kikelewa Camp, situated in a sheltered area beneath Mawenzi. Enjoy dinner and rest after this longer trekking day.
Hiking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Heath
Overnight: Kikelewa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Today begins with a relatively short but steep climb across grassy slopes toward Mawenzi Tarn.
As you ascend, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the landscape takes on a dramatic high-altitude character. Mawenzi Tarn is positioned beneath the impressive spires of Mawenzi, providing spectacular views of one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.
After arriving at camp, spend the afternoon resting and allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude. Depending on conditions and your guide’s assessment, a short acclimatization walk may be arranged.
Hiking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Camp
After breakfast, leave the Mawenzi area and cross the broad Saddle, the high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach Kibo, the highest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones. The trail across the Saddle is relatively gradual but takes place at significant altitude, making a slow and steady pace important.
Arrive at Kibo Camp, where you will have an early dinner and rest. Your guide will brief you on the summit attempt and help ensure you are prepared for the early-morning ascent.
Hiking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Kibo Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Camp
The most demanding day of your Kilimanjaro climb begins in the early hours of the morning.
After a light meal and final preparations, begin the steep ascent toward the crater rim. The trail climbs through rocky terrain and volcanic scree toward Gilman’s Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,700 metres.
Continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) and the highest point in Africa.
After spending time at the summit, begin the descent toward Kibo Camp before continuing down to Horombo Camp on the southern side of the mountain. This is a long and physically demanding day, so rest and hydration are important.
Summit Elevation: 5,895 m / 19,341 ft
Hiking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours total
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic Summit Zone
Overnight: Horombo Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the mountain’s changing ecological zones.
The trail leads from Horombo through the moorland toward Mandara Hut, before continuing into the lush montane forest. As you descend, the vegetation becomes denser and the air warmer.
Continue to Marangu Gate, where you complete the park exit procedures and meet your transfer vehicle. From the gate, transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your 6-day Rongai Route adventure.
Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Montane Forest
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
