6 Days Umbwe Route
6 Days Umbwe Route overview
A Challenging Journey to the Roof of Africa
Take on one of Mount Kilimanjaro’s most direct and demanding routes with the 6 Days Umbwe Route. This challenging trek approaches the mountain from the southern side, beginning through dense montane forest before climbing steeply along the Umbwe Ridge toward the high-altitude landscapes of Kilimanjaro.
The Umbwe Route is known for its steep terrain, dramatic scenery and rapid ascent. After leaving the rainforest behind, the trail continues through moorland and alpine landscapes before joining the southern circuit at Barranco. From there, the journey continues past the spectacular Barranco Wall and onward through Karanga to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt.
The highlight of the adventure is the summit day. Starting in the early hours, you climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, descend through the southern slopes toward Mweka Camp and complete the final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Because the 6-day itinerary provides a relatively fast ascent with limited time for acclimatization, it is best suited to fit, experienced and well-prepared trekkers who understand the demands of high-altitude climbing. Climbers should follow their guide’s pace, allow their bodies time to adjust to altitude and report any symptoms promptly. TANAPA requires Kilimanjaro climbs to be undertaken with a licensed operator and does not permit solo trekking.
With Mbogo Expeditions, your Umbwe climb is carefully organized from the initial transfer and park registration to mountain logistics, experienced guiding, summit preparation and your final descent. Experience the changing environments of Kilimanjaro and challenge yourself on an unforgettable route toward the summit of Africa.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Umbwe Gate, where you complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. From the gate, the trail immediately enters the dense montane forest and follows a steep ridge between deep valleys.
The first day is one of the more demanding starts on Kilimanjaro, with a steady and sometimes steep ascent through the forest. As you climb, the vegetation gradually changes from dense rainforest to areas of heather and moorland.
After several hours of trekking, arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night preparing for the next stage of the climb.
Hiking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Overnight: Umbwe Cave Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
After breakfast, continue climbing along the Umbwe Ridge as the forest becomes more open and the landscape transitions into the moorland zone.
The trail remains steep in sections as you make your way toward the Southern Circuit. As you gain altitude, views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding mountain landscape become increasingly impressive.
Continue toward Barranco Camp, dramatically situated beneath the towering Barranco Wall. The giant senecios and surrounding volcanic landscape create one of the most distinctive environments on the mountain.
Arrive at camp in the afternoon, enjoy your meal and rest while preparing for the next day’s trek.
Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
nvolves a steep scramble over rocky terrain, but it is not a technical rock-climbing section. Your mountain guides will assist you in choosing the safest route upward.
Once above the wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys with impressive views of Kibo and the surrounding alpine landscape. The trail eventually descends into the Karanga Valley before a final ascent brings you to Karanga Camp.
This relatively shorter trekking day provides valuable time at altitude while allowing you to rest and prepare for the increasingly demanding sections ahead.
Hiking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue steadily upward toward Barafu Camp, the high-altitude base used for the summit attempt.
The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert environment. The route follows rocky terrain toward Barafu, with changing views of Kibo and Mawenzi along the way.
Upon reaching Barafu Camp, your main ascent is complete for the day. Enjoy an early dinner and spend the remaining time resting and preparing your equipment for the summit attempt, which begins during the night.
Hiking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
This is the most demanding and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro climb.
You will begin the summit attempt in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight, depending on the guide team’s plan and conditions. Trek slowly through the darkness across steep, rocky terrain toward Stella Point on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 metres.
From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest elevation in Africa at 5,895 metres.
After spending time at the summit, begin the long descent toward Mweka Camp. The descent provides much-needed relief from the high altitude, although the day remains physically demanding due to the combined ascent and descent.
Arrive at Mweka Camp in the evening for dinner and your final night on the mountain.
Summit Elevation: 5,895 m / 19,341 ft
Summit Ascent: Approximately 6–8 hours
Descent to Mweka: Approximately 5–7 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the lush montane forest toward Mweka Gate.
The trail becomes greener and more shaded as you descend to lower elevations. At the gate, complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate, where applicable.
From Mweka Gate, meet your transfer vehicle and continue to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your 6-day Umbwe Route adventure.
