Package Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai (“Mountain of God” in Maasai) is Africa’s only active carbonatite volcano — a dramatic, otherworldly peak rising from the floor of the Rift Valley near Lake Natron. This 2-day climb is a serious but achievable challenge for adventurous travelers, offering a starkly different experience from Kilimanjaro or Meru: a steep, loose-scree ascent through the night, rewarded with a spectacular sunrise over the crater rim and views across the Rift Valley to Lake Natron’s pink flamingo flats.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Arusha to Lake Natron – Base Camp
Depart Arusha and drive to the Lake Natron area, passing through Maasai villages and increasingly dramatic Rift Valley scenery. Check in to your camp near the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, with the afternoon free to rest and prepare for the climb. An early dinner and briefing with your guide, followed by an early night ahead of the midnight start.
Day 2: Summit Climb – Descent – Return to Arusha
Depart camp around midnight for the ascent, climbing steadily through loose volcanic scree and rock in the cool night air to avoid the intense daytime heat. Reach the crater rim in time for sunrise, taking in views of the active crater and, on clear days, across to Lake Natron and the Rift Valley escarpment. Descend back to base camp by late morning, rest and clean up, then drive back to Arusha, arriving in the evening.
